When it comes to welding in Ghana, MIG and TIG are the two most commonly used processes for fabrication work. But which one is right for your project? This guide explains the key differences, advantages and best applications for each process.
What is MIG Welding?
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, also known as GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), uses a continuously fed wire electrode and a shielding gas to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination. It is the most widely used welding process in Ghana for steel fabrication.
Best for: Mild steel fabrication, structural steel, gates, railings, frames, production welding
What is TIG Welding?
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, also known as GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a separate filler rod. It produces the cleanest, most precise welds of any arc welding process.
Best for: Stainless steel, aluminium, thin materials, precision fabrication, visible architectural metalwork
MIG vs TIG: Key Differences
- Speed — MIG is significantly faster than TIG. For production welding and structural work, MIG is the clear winner.
- Weld quality — TIG produces cleaner, more precise welds with better appearance. Essential for stainless steel and visible architectural work.
- Skill required — TIG requires more skill and takes longer to learn. MIG is more forgiving for less experienced welders.
- Materials — MIG is primarily used for mild steel. TIG can weld virtually any metal including stainless steel, aluminium, titanium and exotic alloys.
- Cost — MIG welding is generally less expensive per metre of weld due to higher speed.
- Thin materials — TIG is better for thin sheet metal (under 3mm) where MIG can cause burn-through.
Which Process Should You Choose?
Here's a simple guide:
- Steel gates, railings, structural steel → MIG welding
- Stainless steel kitchens, food equipment → TIG welding
- Aluminium fabrication → TIG welding (AC)
- Pipe welding for oil & gas → TIG root pass + MIG fill
- Thin stainless sheet → TIG welding
- Heavy structural steel → MIG or Arc welding
